When looking at when the majority of fatal school bus accidents occur, the data suggests that the most prominent times were during the early morning and mid-afternoon hours. More specifically, the majority of school-aged fatalities occurred between 3–3:59 p.m. (52 fatalities) and 7–7:59 a.m. (37 fatalities). These periods of time are in alignment with the hours in which students typically travel to and from school.

Where Do Most School Bus Fatalities Occur?

The majority of school bus crashes and fatalities that have occurred over the past 10 years have been in the most densely populated states and counties. Texas and Florida have recorded the greatest number of school bus fatalities with 87 and 76, respectively. The two counties that have had the most reported fatal school bus crashes are Harris County, TX, and Kings County, NY, each with 11.

What Is The Safest Way For Students To Get To School?

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), less than 1% of all traffic fatalities involve children on school transportation vehicles. Moreover, the NHTSA has reported that students are 70 times more likely to get to school safely when taking a bus instead of a car. Despite the potential for catastrophic injuries and accidents on school buses, they are still the safest form of transportation for students.
