School buses are an essential mode of transportation for millions of students across the United States, providing safe passage to and from school every day. Despite their reputation for safety, school bus accidents do still occur, causing concern among parents, educators, students, and policymakers. In a recent study conducted by Brumley Law Firm, it was found that 976 fatal school bus accidents occurred in the U.S. between 2013 and 2022. To further understand the gravity of this issue, we will highlight key findings from the study and some of the most common causes of school bus accidents.
How Many People Have Died in School Bus Crashes?
Between 2013 and 2022, 1,082 people died in school bus crashes, and another 132,000 people were injured. Fortunately, there has been a gradual decline in fatalities, with an average of 108 deaths per year. The highest number of deaths occured in 2013, followed by 2016 and 2014, respectively. During 2020, the lowest number of school bus deaths occurred (54 fatalities). This stark decline can be linked to the spread of COVID-19 and the transition to online learning.
What Time of Day Are School Bus Fatalities Most Likely To Occur?
When looking at when the majority of fatal school bus accidents occur, the data suggests that the most prominent times were during the early morning and mid-afternoon hours. More specifically, the majority of school-aged fatalities occurred between 3–3:59 p.m. (52 fatalities) and 7–7:59 a.m. (37 fatalities). These periods of time are in alignment with the hours in which students typically travel to and from school.
Where Do Most School Bus Fatalities Occur?
The majority of school bus crashes and fatalities that have occurred over the past 10 years have been in the most densely populated states and counties. Texas and Florida have recorded the greatest number of school bus fatalities with 87 and 76, respectively. The two counties that have had the most reported fatal school bus crashes are Harris County, TX, and Kings County, NY, each with 11.
What Is The Safest Way For Students To Get To School?
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), less than 1% of all traffic fatalities involve children on school transportation vehicles. Moreover, the NHTSA has reported that students are 70 times more likely to get to school safely when taking a bus instead of a car. Despite the potential for catastrophic injuries and accidents on school buses, they are still the safest form of transportation for students.
Causes of School Bus Accidents
Understanding the causes of school bus crashes can help to improve the safety of passengers, bus drivers, and all others on the road. Here’s a look at some of the most common causes:
- Weather: Adverse weather conditions, such as intense rain, fog, or snow, can significantly reduce visibility and cause slippery road conditions. This can make it increasingly difficult for bus drivers to maneuver the bus or come to a complete stop.
- Bus Driver Negligence: Driver negligence also plays a prominent role in school bus accidents. Bus drivers who are distracted, speeding, intoxicated, or fatigued have a compromised ability to safely control the bus, making accidents much more likely.
- Inadequate Bus Maintenance: Buses must be maintained regularly and inspected each time before driving. Failure to do this can lead to mechanical failures such as faulty tires or worn-out brakes, which can result in catastrophic consequences.
