With Tennessee’s busy metro areas, Nashville, Memphis, and Knoxville, the state is home to some of the most traveled highways in the country. Even smaller communities and rural regions have highly traveled roads.

These roads are filled with commuters, tourists, and freight traffic who take on the risks of driving daily. Recent findings show that deadly crashes occur far too often in specific stretches of highway in Tennessee. Knowing which roads are risky can help you as a driver to take extra precautions.

This analysis on the deadliest road stretches is Tennessee analyzes data from the U.S. Department of Transportation, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). It found that I-24 near the Nashville International Airport heading into central Nashville is one of the most dangerous stretches of highway.

Over a five-year period, this stretch saw 35 fatal crashes, making it the deadliest in the state.

But the danger isn’t limited to one area. The analysis revealed that:

  • Four of the top 10 deadliest stretches are on I-24.
  • Four are on I-40.
  • One is on I-65.
  • One is on I-240.

  • Metro areas with the highest concentrations include Nashville (5 stretches), Memphis (3 stretches), Knoxville (1), and Chattanooga (1).

Why Are These Roads So Dangerous?

Several factors contribute to why these particular stretches stand out. These include heavy traffic volumes in and around metro areas., high speeds on major interstates, limited visibility or sharp curves in some sections, and driver fatigue and distraction.

Tips for Staying Safe on Tennessee Highways

While you can’t control road design or traffic volume, you can take steps to reduce risk on your commute.

  • Slow down in heavy traffic zones. Speed is a major cause of fatal accidents.
  • Be observant and minimize distractions. Glancing at a phone for even a few seconds can be fatal.
  • Give more space between cars. Tailgating leaves little time to brake if traffic suddenly slows.
  • Be extra cautious at night or in bad weather. Impaired visibility and slick roads increase dangers.
  • Plan ahead. While traveling through Nashville, Memphis, or Knoxville, heavy traffic should be anticipated and additional time allowed.

A Reminder for Every Driver

Tennessee’s highways are vital to its economy and communities, but as this study shows, some stretches can be particularly hazardous. By being aware of the state’s most dangerous roads and practicing defensive driving, you can reduce your chances of being involved in a serious crash.
